AB-288 News!

On October 8, 2015, Governor Brown signed AB 288, the College and Career Access Pathways Act. This legislation “authorize[s] California Community College districts to enter into formal partnership agreements with local school districts to expand access to concurrent enrollment opportunities for high school students.” As the goals stated in this bill may of particular interest to the Education Planning community, we have posted the bill’s fact sheet HERE and have created a discussion thread on GetSatisfaction forum, which can be found HERE. Legislative information can be found HERE.

"The Shapeless River: Does a Lack of Structure Inhibit Students' Progress at Community Colleges? (Assessment of Evidence Series)

By: Judith Scott-Clayton

Abstract

For many students at community colleges, finding a path to degree completion is the equivalent of navigating a shapeless river on a dark night—but very few studies have explicitly examined the role of structure in student persistence. This paper addresses the issue of student persistence by integrating previously disconnected evidence and drawing on ideas from behavioral economics and psychology.

Evidence suggests that the lack of structure in many community colleges is likely to result in less-than-optimal decisions by students about whether and how to persist toward a credential. Though there is no silver-bullet intervention to address this problem, this paper highlights several promising approaches and suggests directions for future experimentation and research."

"Redesigning America's Community Colleges: A Clearer Path to Student Success

By: Thomas Bailey, Shanna Smith Jaggars & Davis Jenkins

Abstract

Our nation is urgently trying to increase the number of college graduates it produces, and community colleges are under enormous pressure to contribute to this growth. In Redesigning America's Community Colleges: A Clearer Path to Student Success, Thomas Bailey, Shanna Smith Jaggars, and Davis Jenkins argue that to substantially increase student completion, community colleges must engage in fundamental redesign.

The authors delineate a set of research-based design principles and strategies to help colleges achieve this challenging goal, and lay out a path for community colleges working to achieve greater success for their students, and for our nation as a whole."
